Breaking News: Syria and Turkey face off in deadly artillery exchange

By Eliana Goldstein in Student News

In the last 24 hours, the border tensions between Turkey and Syria have escalated to the point of exchanged artillery strikes.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Syrian mortars hit a Turkish border town on Wednesday morning, killing five people. In retaliation, Turkey targeted multiple areas within the Syrian border.

This exchange represents the latest rise in tensions between the two countries. When Syria's government collapsed in 2011, Turkish border towns were inadvertently dragged into the conflict raging right next door. Though Turkey had been tolerant of crossfire, civilian deaths cannot be ignored.

International organizations NATO and the UN are hesitating to take a firm position, but are following the events closely for any changes.
