Fairview strikes late, defeating Legacy Lightning

By Caleb Pykkonen in Sports

The Knights defense stood tall Saturday night, and the offense came up huge when they needed to.In a back and forth battle, the Lightning and Knights struggled all night to gain an edge in a gritty defensive struggle. But, the Lightning were unable to stop Fairview senior running back Ben Meyer in the fourth quarter, and he led the Knights to victory.

Through most of the first quarter the game was scoreless. But late in the quarter a short punt by Anders Hill put Legacy at the Fairview 21 yard line, and 6 rushing plays later the Lightning had the first touchdown of the game.

In the second quarter the Knights D came up big again. Legacy had the ball deep in Knights territory, but on fourth down the Knights were able to stuff a Legacy run. This set up a huge drive by the Knights, highlighted by a big pass to junior Cole Scheifele. Scheifele then punched the ball in the end zone with 3:00 minutes left on the clock in the first half, leaving the score tied after  two.

The third quarter saw the Knights drive deep into Legacy territory, but kicker Patrick Rios’ field goal attempt was blocked. The score was tied at 7 for most of the quarter, but with 1:22 to go Legacy scored to go up a touchdown.

But, with their backs against the wall, the Knights stood tall. Meyer scored a touchdown to start the fourth, and their defense held Legacy scoreless for the rest of the quarter. Neither team was able to gain an edge, but with 3:21 to go Meyer ripped off another huge play; this time he had a 62 yard TD run with 3:21 left in the game, and that was all the Knights needed as they were able to hold on for victory.
