Heroic Runner Charged with Murder

By Elise Maclean in Student News

On February 14th, in the early morning, Oscar Pistorius was charged with murder when his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, was found dead in a puddle of blood with gunshot wounds. Early news reports stated that Pistorius had accidentally shot his girlfriend thinking she was an intruder

Pistorius was arrested and taken to jail in Pretoria. A bail hearing was scheduled for Friday, but police said they planned to oppose bail in this case. According to the New York Times, “Mr. Pistorius’s arrest stood out for the severity of the charges, the unique hardships he had overcome and the outsize triumphs he had won, not just against other disabled athletes but against able-bodied ones as well.”

His arrest stands as a reminder that violence is an everyday part of life in South Africa. The fear of armed robberies cause citizens to arm themselves with handguns for protection.

According to USA Today, “Some media commentators speculated that the victim may have been in the act of surprising Pistorius for Valentine's Day.”
