Morency's goal sends FHS into quarterfinals

By Matt Sparkman in Sports

A first half goal from senior striker Daphnee Morency vaulted Fairview girls' soccer past second-ranked Fossil Ridge early Saturday afternoon in Fort Collins.

The Knights, a 15-seed, managed hold off the Sabercats, who have arguably the most potent offense in the state, due to the defensive efforts of Berkley Gamble, Pyrenee Steiner, Zoe Verhoeven, Lauren White and goaltender Rachel DeCurnou.

Just three weeks ago, Fairview captured an early lead in the regular season against Fossil Ridge. But a late second-half goal from the Sabercats sent the Knights back to Boulder with a tie, instead of a W.

Fairview will face 10th ranked Heritage in Littleton on Tuesday. The two teams faced each other earlier this season, with Heritage coming away with a 1-0 victory. But the Knights are a different team, having won their last three games by a margin of 9-0.

It will take another strong defensive effort, but don't put it past the Knights to advance to the state semifinals for the second time in the last three seasons.
