Tennis takes second at state championship
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Gates Tennis Center the Fairview tennis team competed in the Colorado Class 5A state tennis championship. Although they fell to Cherry Creek 71-80 on the final day, the team had an impressive run, and no. 4 doubles pair Nick Blanco and Ben Krahenbuhl took home a state title. At the end of first day, Fairview found itself tied with Cherry Creek at 19 points each and with six of the team’s seven positions in the semifinals, the only exception being no. 1 singles player Eli Winegardner. The following day after playing in six semifinal matches, the Knights trailed Cherry Creek by only one point and hopes of a Fairview state championship were still alive.
No. 2 and 3 singles and No. 3 and 4 doubles continued on to the next day’s finals in which all 4 positions would be pitted against juggernaut Cherry Creek. Only the No. 4 doubles pair Blanco and Krahenbuhl would prevail in their finals match.
Despite the disappointment of losing to the Bruins, the Knights finished off their successful season with a triumphant second place finish.
Looking to the future, only No. 2 singles player Johnny Combs and No. 2 doubles player Dakota Muench will not return to Fairview, so many members of the current team will have a chance at redemption in next year’s state championship.
