The School Board recently voted to instate a new security policy requiring BVSD emails to change passwords once a week. This is being established because multiple students had their emails hacked, potentially leaking their personal information to third parties. While this information wasn’t harmful, this could endanger all BVSD students and employees if hacked by someone with malicious intent.
Besides solely making a new password every week, this new policy will require it to be different from the last 10 passwords set on the account, instead of three. This will increase the security of BVSD emails, but will make logging into any BVSD account much more difficult.
Several students have voiced their concerns that they will forget their passwords and lose their accounts. This will make their academics much more difficult, as it is difficult to do assignments without having access to an email.
“I believe that this will cause much more harm than good. As a forgetful person, there is no way I will be able to remember this many email passwords. I’d have to write them down on a notecard when creating them, which defeats the whole purpose of the policy, since someone could easily take the notecard. I will be attending the next school board meeting to express these concerns,” said an anonymous student (9).
While many students are dissenting against the School Board’s decision, there are a few who greatly support it.
“This is extremely important for the safety of all BVSD students. I have had a few assignments that included my address, and if someone got into my school email, they would have easy access to this information. I’d much rather random people didn’t have access to this type of sensitive information,” said an anonymous student (11).
As well as the previous three rules, a fourth rule will also require the inclusion of the smell of your first birthday. This may be a difficult task, seeing as how many people do not remember this smell. BVSD will be using new AI technology to verify whether or not this smell was correct.
A fifth rule: requiring the inclusion of 6 troll emojis and 5 smirking cat emojis. This will make typing passwords much more difficult on Chromebooks because they don’t have emojis, but emoticons such as ;] or =-) can be used as a substitution.
Finally, a sixth rule: requiring your least favorite color to be included. This color cannot be the same as any previous weeks, and will be verified, so choose your colors carefully. You have been warned.
An example of a password including all the new rules would be “Cherryblossoms( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°):3:3( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)Orange!!!!”
This will be implemented soon, but no date has been decided. Perhaps it will be finalized next year by April 1st.
Just kidding… APRIL FOOLS!
