Many BVSD students are wanting to expand their athletic opportunities by pushing for an intramural flag football team in the coming fall. When starting a new club or sports team, the most important thing is for there to be eager people wanting to join, and word is many girls are looking into the possibility of playing flag football.
“Flag football is a growing sport in Colorado. There has been some initial interest in potentially looking at that as a sport inside of BVSD. This plan that we have in place where the meeting is gonna be at Monarch and getting that information out, is the initial stages to seeing if there’s enough interest in our district to actually create a team,” said athletic director Nick Kosovich.
The word is getting around and it is sparking interest amongst girls at Fairview.“I’ve heard about it and it seems pretty interesting. I think it’s nice how they’re trying to get more people involved in it and giving an opportunity for girls to join football, as regular football is very competitive if girls were wanting to join,” said Lula Graham (10)
Flag football is a non-contact version of American football, the opposing team tackles by pulling a flag off the player carrying the ball. Flag football can be a great way for people to enjoy the sport of football without some of the tough intensity. “I play club flag football, but I would have loved to have played for Fairview,” said Bella Pope (12)
Many students organized to request flag football at the school but it was shut down because of how long it took to get it passed through the district. Flag football has been wanted by many students, though it seems it has been a strenuoeous process to implement it. Football is an intense sport that people love to watch, but playing it is a different story; to give the opportunity to play this sport for a wider range of people is something that intrigues students at Fairview and BVSD district.“We’re trying to just get initial interest and see, is this something that our communities want?” said Mr. Kosovich.
Girl’s flag football would be a district team like many other sports here at Fairview. Sports like girl’s lacrosse, men’s volleyball, and rugby. The more interest there is the more likely that the sport will be implemented. “I am really interested in playing, I think it would be a fun opportunity. My friends and I talk about it at lunch and all of us are very intrigued,” Said Lucy Catlin (10)
The idea of flag football excites many students and would be a fun thing to get more students involved in sports.
