There’s nothing like the first week of college football. The crisp breeze floating through the air, the sun making its descent over the horizon, and the stadium lights clicking on and illuminating the grass and paint for the first time. For many, this is the best time of the year. And nothing is better than rooting for your team, fueled by the anticipation of the season coming for months. All summer, your favorite teams have been preparing relentlessly, anticipating the first touch of the leather to the cleat.
The excitement has been evident at Fairview, too. Many kids throughout the school cheer on their own teams throughout the season, including many who root for teams outside of Colorado. “Go
Big Blue Kentucky Wildcats!” said Oliver Peterson (12). Many people around Fairview have been anticipating the start of the season, and have been following their teams through social media. Social media has made a huge impact for fans that watch their team from out of state. “I watched [a social media post] the other day of the [Kentucky] kicker, and oh my god, I was pretty excited, ” said Peterson.
On apps like Instagram and Snapchat, social media teams for universities like Kentucky are becoming more and more engaging and creative. Just like Kentucky, the University of Colorado media team has been recognized nationally for great media content and tens of millions of views online.
Others, like Nathan Leevan (12), prefer the in-state teams, such as the University of Colorado. A lot of hype has come around Colorado this season, especially because of the superstar athlete in Travis Hunter. Leevan has been excited about watching the Buffs this season, and especially their star player. “Travis Hunter, he’s a dawg,” said Leevan. Travis Hunter is one of the most mesmerizing and incredible athletes anyone has seen in college sports. He is projected to go top three in the upcoming NFL draft after the season, and has a top five Heisman trophy odds this season.
And Travis Hunter has certainly lived up to the hype. On Thursday night, he posted a whopping three touchdowns and nearly 200 passing yards, with ridiculous grabs coming left and right. Colorado opened their season with a nail biter in Boulder, leaving with a 31 to 26 defeat over the North Dakota State Bison. Many, including Leevan, are looking forward to CU’s in-state rival game coming up on September 14th, where they will play CSU in Fort Collins.
But students are just as excited for college football, excited for the good games and good players. Peterson is also very excited to watch the University of Georgia. As Kentucky gets prepared for their match with Georgia later this season on September 14th, Peterson says: “We got a shot, I’ll tell you that.” Georgia is looking extremely menacing this year, after not making it into the College Football Playoff last year. Georgia started off their season with a dominant 34 to 3 victory over Clemson.
